HEATHER JEWELLERY

Heather pieces are handcrafted from the stems of natural Scottish heather, renowned for its purple bloom. This beautiful and unique Heather jewellery has been produced since the 1950s. The process was developed by a craftsman named Hugh Kerr who started using heather stems to make very small quantities of this unique jewellery in his own workshop. The process is still continued today. First the heather is collected from the surrounding Perthshire hills. The stems are then dried, shotblast to remove the bark, and dyed various colors using natural dyes. Stems of different colors are mixed and compressed into a block.

Eighty tons of pressure is required to press the blocks of stems together. The block is then cut, shaped, and filled by skilled craftworkers, before being lacquered to give the final finish. The pieces of jewellery are then set into decorative metal fittings using Celtic and Scottish designs.
